I was surprised with my ease as I read a novel about another pandemic and THE pandemic we are currently living through. But don't be mistaken, the pandemics play secondary roles in this tale of moon colonies and time travel.  -Christy

Multigenerational family saga that traces a Vietnamese-American family in New Orleans back to Saigon and beyond, with a focus on mother-daughter and sister conflicts, using birth year animals and elements as a lens. The October Farro recipe is phenomenal, but the true selling point of this particular cookbook is its message to the readers to be gentle to themselves. Everyone deserves to eat well, even though mental health issues make that harder (either energy-wise or belief-wise). [And to those who know my eating habits - this is decidedly NOT a vegetarian cookbook, but I'm enjoying the parts I'll eat.] -Ginger

Nuclear Family: A Novel By Joseph Han Cover Image
$26.00
ISBN: 9781640094864
Availability: On our shelves
Published: Counterpoint - June 7th, 2022

Part family drama and ghost story, part coming of age, and part critique of American imperialism in the Pacific.

This novel is stylistically innovative in ways that reflect the changing mental states of the characters as they confront a family emergency: eldest son Jacob is teaching English in Seoul, when he appears on international news failing to cross the DMZ to North Korea. What no one back home in the US knows is that Jacob had been possessed by the grandfather he never knew. Words on the page form towers and walls; his sister Grace's attempts to escape her own racing thoughts lead to censored words and phrases on some pages within her chapters.

Although some scenes in the story are heavy, the novel has a fundamental optimism. The love the family members have for each other is bigger than the understanding gaps between them, moments of levity appear throughout, and even the futures of Korea and Hawai’i themselves are presented as full of possibility. -Ginger

When Women Were Dragons: A Novel By Kelly Barnhill Cover Image
$28.00
ISBN: 9780385548229
Availability: On our shelves
Published: Doubleday - May 3rd, 2022

The story follows Alex as she grows up in the aftermath of the Mass Dragoning of 1955, when she lost an aunt whom she's no longer allowed to speak of - since the Mass Dragoning affected only American women, it quickly picked up the semi-taboo status of other women’s issues. Despite the magical nature of the central premise, the novel itself is focused on the mundane - only the nature of the family secrets is magical. Alex is taught by adults to keep everything close to her chest - especially the fact that her beloved baby sister used to be her cousin. The author leans hard into the unfortunate lesson that some grown-ups are less concerned with kids' interior lives and well-being than with how that child's behavior reflects on the adult amongst other adults. -Ginger

So far my favorite book of 2022! I don’t see it being dethroned, either. I can’t, just can’t, adequately describe its tone: soft apocalypse, vaguely drawn, manic rushes of thought slowed by cooking soliloquies, sped by political rants, derailed by shocking events. Troubled lovers Sam and Eleanor are living through slow motion panic and extended joy, constantly face-slapped by recent history. Fathomless cynicism, luminous happiness, an end so beautiful and long-expected that its very incomprehensibility is pure wonder. I just love it. -Matt

There is literally nothing about this book that I would change. When an orc with chronic back pain decides to retire from adventuring to open a coffee shop, so begins the next chapter of her life, which we are fortunate enough to bear witness to.
