A haunting Southern Gothic from an award-winning master of suspense, A House With Good Bones explores the dark, twisted roots lurking just beneath the veneer of a perfect home and family.
"Mom seems off."
Her brother's words echo in Sam Montgomery's ear as she turns onto the quiet North Carolina street where their mother lives alone.

Like Dewes's earlier novels, The Last Watch and The Exiled Fleet, Rubicon is fantastically character-focused military sci-fi. Adriene is flawed but brave, anxious but giving her all. It's so rewarding to witness her developing relationships with her squad members, with the awkward but friendly chief systems engineer, with her Rubicon, and with herself. Readers who, like me, loved Rake and Cav (and all the supporting characters) will also love Adriene, Daroga, et al.
But for that very reason, this book left me feeling haunted. The raw trauma the characters endure is brightened by moments of healing, of friendship, and of empathy; brightened, but not overshadowed. This book is as much about grief as it is about loyalty. There is pain, disillusionment, and bitter regret. And the ending will stick with you.

How well do we know those closest to us? And what do they owe us, and we them?
This Isn't Going to End Well, Daniel Wallace's deeply personal account of his decades of near-worship of his brother-in-law, replaced by a cold bitterness, had me asking these questions. I at times felt as if I was reading an intensely personal journal not meant for anyone's eyes except those of the writer's future self.
Wallace lays bare his decades of admiration for his sister's husband, a legendary artist and outdoorsman with near-cult status, that turned to cold, grim anger for an act that Wallace saw as an unforgivable betrayal.
In trying to understand the man he thought he knew, Wallace explores his own dark inner chambers, a painful struggle toward a better understanding of himself.
This memoir is an immersive read of one man's journey through anger and bewilderment toward forgiveness, a path not easy for him to forge or the reader to witness him doing, but well worth the effort.

TJ Klune has never let me down, but I wasn't expecting In The Lives of Puppets to outshine the rest like it has. A Pinocchio retelling with a queer, dystopian setting? This book tore my heart out and then threw it back into my chest three times larger. The descriptions, the characters, the representation!! I cannot recommend this enough. If you're a fan of any of the above: found family, classic lit remakes, Wall-E, and/or commentaries on the supernova that is humanity, read! this!! book!!!

A remarkable novel that appeals directly to our relationships with our books. Each chapter describes a different person’s encounter with the same fictional novel - from the original author to slush pile reader to student reading for class - and explores how no one reads the same book or gets the same experience out of a book. Some characters’ lives intersect with other characters in later chapters; others seem tied together only by the words on the page. Absolute catnip for readers.

I fell in love with Julia Franks' beautiful writing when I read her novel Over the Plain Houses several years ago, and I was excited to hear that she has a new book coming out in June 2023. The Say So tells the story of two women who are pregnant and single. The first woman, Edie, faces her dilemma in the 1950’s when out of wedlock pregnancy was handled with stealth and a good dose of shame. The second woman, Meera, becomes pregnant in the 1980’s. Her options are many but so are societal pressures. This book brings to the surface the emotional and physical suffering that unwed pregnant women faced in the last century (I still have a tough time saying that!). Timely and full of hard truths, The Say So is commentary and a compelling story wrapped in one. As are most of the books I read, this one will make for a terrific book club discussion.
