By popular demand, we're returning to The Hobbit! But let's shake things up a bit.

I invite you to join me in reading The Hobbit as annotated by Douglas Anderson, a leading Tolkien scholar. This edition includes information on the publication history of The Hobbit, how the story was updated to accommodate the One Ring, connections to the real world and literary history, and international illustrations, as well as many of Tolkien's own drawings and paintings. Also included are previously unpublished poems and the full text of The Quest of Erebor.

If you aren't ready for another copy of a book you already own (or if this is your first time!), you're welcome to read whichever edition of The Hobbit is on your bookshelf. Just be prepared for discussion of these additional elements too.

For this meeting, we will be reading through Chapter 10: A Warm Welcome (page 254 in the second annotated edition).
