By popular demand, we're returning to The Hobbit! But let's shake things up a bit.
We will continue reading The Hobbit as annotated by Douglas Anderson, a leading Tolkien scholar. This edition includes information on the publication history of The Hobbit, how the story was updated to accommodate the One Ring, connections to the real world and literary history, and international illustrations, as well as many of Tolkien's own drawings and paintings. Also included are previously unpublished poems and the full text of The Quest of Erebor.
You're also welcome to read whichever edition of The Hobbit is on your bookshelf. Just be prepared for discussion of these additional elements too.
For this meeting, we will be reading through Chapter 10: A Warm Welcome (page 254 in the second annotated edition).
For readers throughout the world, The Hobbit serves as an introduction to the enchanting world of Middle-earth, home of elves, wizards, dwarves, goblins, dragons, orcs and a host of other creatures depicted in The Lord of the Rings and The Silmarillion -- tales that sprang from the mind of the most beloved author of all time, J.R.R. Tolkien.
Newly expanded and completely redesigned, Douglas A.
The journey through Middle-earth begins here with J.R.R. Tolkien's classic prelude to his Lord of the Rings trilogy.
The stirring adventure that begins The Lord of the Rings, the greatest fantasy epic of all time
When Thorin Oakenshield and his band of dwarves embark upon a dangerous quest to reclaim the hoard of gold stolen from them by the evil dragon Smaug, Gandalf the wizard suggests an unlikely accomplice: Bilbo Baggins, an unassuming Hobbit dwelling in peaceful Hobbiton.
This deluxe hardcover edition of J.R.R. Tolkien's classic prelude to his Lord of the Rings trilogy contains a short introduction by Christopher Tolkien, a reset text incorporating the most up-to-date corrections, and all of Tolkien’s own drawings and full-color illustrations, including the rare “Mirkwood” piece.
