Description: Inspired by essayists such as Annie Dillard, James Baldwin, Virginia Woolf, John Jeremiah Sullivan, and Zadie Smith, students in the Advanced Essay course will explore this remarkably flexible form as they plan, write and revise their own ambitious essays. True to the roots of the essai (Fr.:  To attempt, to test), students will experiment in their own work with some of its various forms:  the personal essay, the reported essay, and the woven essay.  Instructor Duncan Murrell will lead craft talks on voice, structure, wordcraft, and the fascinating history of the essay. Students will read widely, and will write and workshop one essay every three weeks, or two total.

Note: On 4/8 and 4/22, there will be large in-store events. Workshops will be meeting at HQ Raleigh.
