Shannon has created an incredibly intricate fantasy world that sweeps over continents and seas. Filled with dragons, prophecies, and magic that springs from the wells of immortal trees. A queen, a sorceress, and a dragon rider from opposite ends of the world find their fates entwined as the end of a centuries-long peace between humankind and nightmarish, dragon-like creatures nears. This book completely absorbed me from the very first page, the characters are complicated and sympathetic, and the settings are so vivid and unique. The different threads of the story come together at just the right times, and the resolution is worth every single one of these 800 pages.

— Caroline

The worldbuilding here, with all the various nations and the peoples who inhabit them, is rich and highly developed. I hate to compare any fantasy to Tolkien, but I do feel this has the potential to be a modern-day Middle-Earth. There's so much historical background! There is a glossary. And I've never read a story where both Eastern and Western dragons exist, so fleshing out their similarities and differences was fascinating.

The characters are another strong point. It's rewarding to see each of them grow and change as their beliefs are challenged.

It is so refreshing to read a fantasy novel where violence against women is not the norm. In this world, women are equals to men and occupy all of the same roles in society. Equally refreshing is the way LGB characters are viewed by society.

Read this book if you...
do not want: sexual violence, misogyny, torture porn, or the Nameless One's return
do want: court politics, dragons, assassins, witchcraft, pirates, and characters spanning a range of ethnicities, ages, religions, and sexual identities

— Kaley

Don’t be intimidated by this behemoth of a book. It is a beautiful masterpiece of fantasy and adventure with dragon riders, dragons (duh), and a whisper of romance.

— Michelle
