Four Treasures of the Sky (Large Print / Library Binding)

Staff Reviews
Daiyu, the protagonist of Jenny Tinghui Zhang's debut novel, survives being kidnapped from her village in China, a trip across the Pacific in a barrel of coal to a brothel in San Francisco, and finally escaping to a small mining town in Idaho, only to discover there is no place to hide from the hateful sentiments swirling all around. After the Chinese Exclusion Act emboldens the town's citizens to become increasingly hostile, Daiyu must navigate her own journey of self discovery in the face of growing aggression and violence. While she never flinches at showing the ugly realities of the 19th Century American West, Zhang still manages to imbue her characters with empathy and hope. Underneath its difficult subject matter is a beautifully written novel and a timely social critique that's still relevant today.

“A stunning debut! Four Treasures of the Sky is pointed, heartbreaking, and breathtakingly beautiful. Indisputably a masterpiece, and I am already looking forward to whatever journey Zhang wants to take us on next.”
