Red, White & Royal Blue: A Novel (Paperback)

Staff Reviews
History, huh?
I read the advanced copy of this book and loved it; then passed it on to another staff member, who also loved it; who then passed it on to yet another staff member, who also loved it. There were many excited break room conversations about this book.
McQuiston wrote that her goal was to create a "trauma-soothing, alternate-but-realistic reality", and that's exactly what this is. The characters are wonderful, each and every one, and the total ease with which the author includes a spectrum of representation is reaffirming. The book is a sweet romance, but also a story about identity, family, politics, grief, and fighting for what you believe in. And I guarantee you'll laugh out loud at the Great Turkey Calamity.

This book is feel-good to the core, with its snarky dialogue, spunky, loveable ensemble cast of characters, and irreverant inside look at both the British Monarchy and the American Political System. Alex Claremont-Diaz, first son of the United States, is driven, handsome, and loved by the entire country. However, when his fued with the English prince, Henry, causes an international incident, the governments on both sides of the pond come together to find a diplomatic solution. The verdict: Alex and Henry will have to convince the press, and the world, that they are actually best friends. Unexpected camaraderie, romance, and table dancing ensues. You can feel the heart on every page of this book. I absolutely could not put it down.

This is the best book I have read this year. I am not usually a fan of books that take place in the real world, but this work is totally worth it. It has some of the best comedy and drama and I have ever read and does a wonderful job of blending the two. But what makes it so good is the romance that will make any reader’s heart go wild. To anyone searching for a new and wonderful romance, I highly recommend this book.

“Fresh, irreverent, and funny, Red, White & Royal Blue is a delight and a treasure. With subtle jabs, Casey McQuiston pokes fun at both the public face of the British monarchy as well as the back-door politicking that dominates the U.S. political scene. The story follows the self-centered Alex Claremont-Diaz (America’s First Son) and his interactions with British Prince Henry of Wales. As hostility increases between two political scions forced into a sham friendship, we see the framework of political destiny and duty begin to fray. Little by little, hostility turns to something else entirely. This is a story about happiness — and, more importantly, honesty — for those who live their lives in the public eye.”

What happens when America's First Son falls in love with the Prince of Wales?
When his mother became President, Alex Claremont-Diaz was promptly cast as the American equivalent of a young royal. Handsome, charismatic, genius—his image is pure millennial-marketing gold for the White House. There's only one problem: Alex has a beef with the actual prince, Henry, across the pond. And when the tabloids get hold of a photo involving an Alex-Henry altercation, U.S./British relations take a turn for the worse.
Heads of family, state, and other handlers devise a plan for damage control: staging a truce between the two rivals. What at first begins as a fake, Instragramable friendship grows deeper, and more dangerous, than either Alex or Henry could have imagined. Soon Alex finds himself hurtling into a secret romance with a surprisingly unstuffy Henry that could derail the campaign and upend two nations. Can love save the world after all? Where do we find the courage, and the power, to be the people we are meant to be? And how can we learn to let our true colors shine through? Casey McQuiston's Red, White & Royal Blue proves: true love isn't always diplomatic.
