This is a rock memoir of very hard living, addiction and violence, constant anger and shame. It's so well-written that it suspends some obvious questions about Mark Lanegan's life and choices; questions he himself turns out to have been asking his whole life. Lanegan, vocalist for Screaming Trees, eventually had a successful and high-quality solo career (look into it!). SING BACKWARDS AND WEEP can't be said to be an unflinching biography - he flinches often and with good reason. I flinched a few times reading it. By the end of the book, he has pulled his life together and faced his old self. My only regret is that the book ends where his personal troubles got better, neglecting most of his solo years.— Matt
