HELP WANTED: Assistant General Manager
Quail Ridge Books is an award-winning, nationally-recognized independent bookstore serving Raleigh, North Carolina for over 34 years. In keeping with our mission (see below), we are looking for a highly motivated and well-organized booklover to assist our General Manager in all aspects of operating a successful independent bookstore. The job comes with plenty of responsibility balanced by the many rewards of working in a fun and stimulating environment with delightful people and meeting some of the country’s most interesting authors.
Meet weekly w/owner and managers to review plans and actions. Be prepared to assist or stand-in for General Manager in all capacities. Specific areas of responsibility may include:
-Store operations and maintenance: Make decisions and enter contracts for phone, internet, utilities, HVAC, charge card processors, banking, copier lease, security system, cleaning services, business, liability, workers' comp. and health insurance. Take required actions to make sure store is well maintained physically.
-Safety and security: Monitor safety and security standards and make sure all staff are trained on them.
-Accounting: Work with bookkeeper to maintain best practices, including producing a monthly P&L in a timely fashion. Monitor banking, QuickBooks and other financial activity, review accounts payable, accounts receivable. Implement new procedures when appropriate.
-Technology needs: Work with technology staff to make sure all systems are maintained, including POS and AV, and that staff are trained on them.
-Professional: Liaise with shopping center and represent the store in other capacities.
-Other: Let us know if you have experience and talents in other areas pertinent to bookselling. There is a very good possibility we will use those, too!
Compensation and benefits
Health insurance (60/40), vacation, sick days and other benefits apply. Salary will be negotiable based on qualifications and experience.
