My high-school and college education on the history of Africa was pretty skimpy and with the important changes going on now on the continent, I wanted to be more informed. Meredith's voluminous work, The Fate of Africa, which is out in this freshly updated edition, was a wonderful choice. Divided by country and focusing on the history post-independence, the writing is accessible, comprehensive, and interesting. Worth reading in full or skimming a chapter/country at a time if you want to have a better understanding of modern Africa.

For science fiction fans, Ubik is Philip K. Dick at his best and definitely a good choice to pick up as an introduction to Dick's work. Set in a future where the frozen dead can live on in a mental world and be consulted by the living, this mind-bending novel questions the nature of reality as it seems to unravel around the protagonists. Grimly humorous and thought provoking. Also, if you're interested in the theme, take a look at Keith Brooke's The Accord for another take on the possibilities of life postmortem.

What better way to beat the summer heat and escape the worries of the city than a relaxing boat ride down the Thames. Only Jerome's hapless boaters encounter trouble at every turn, from disappearing locks to capsizing boats to the surprising difficulty of assembling a test to the most astoundingly complete hypochondria. Jerome's dry wit is as hilarious today as it was when written over a hundred years ago.

Although not a strict vegan (I'm a lacto-ovo vegetarian), this has become my first stop cookbook. The book starts out with sections on vegan nutrition and basics, giving a good overview for someone just starting out. Then, filled with recipes from around the world, generally using ingredients that are easy to find, there will be plenty of favorites for vegans and non-vegans alike.

Rubens' debut is a whirlwind ride through his bizarre universe where even the planets have corporate sponsors (Your-Name-Here). We follow Cole, a rather heavily indebted space adventurer and occasional thief, as he flees his debtors and accidentally saves some orphans and perhaps a whole society. Darkly funny, fast-paced and with a healthy dose of absurdity, this is a fun read for scifi lovers or anyone looking for an imaginitive book.

Jacob feels trapped in his family, ignored by the brother he idolizes, overlooked by his absent mother, and berated by an emotionally abusive father who swings back and forth between outbursts at signs of imperfection in his family that might embarrass him and attempts at reassuring affection. The novel shines when Jacob escapes into his own imagination, allowing him to stand up to his father and take control of his life in darkly humorous passages. Braff's writing gives the tension and quiet rage that fill the Green house life and his wit makes this a darkly comic and affecting gem.

Anatoly Sukhanov's life is falling apart. A low–level Soviet apparatchik and editor of the premiere party-approved art journal, Sukhanov, through a series of dreams, is forced to reconsider the decision he made to trade his own Western–influenced artistic talent and dreams for a safe, comfortable life toeing the party line. A dreamlike fog permeates Grushin's prose, adding to the enchantment of this beautifully written first novel.

Mengestu's sparsely written debut novel is a compelling and melancholy character study of Ethiopian immigrant Sepha Stephanos. Stephanos is content to merely drift through his life, letting his small convenience store lapse into decrepitude and longing of Africa with fellow immigrants Kenneth and Joseph, until the gentrification of the neighborhood brings the white Judith and her daughter, Naomi, with whom Stephanos can glimpse the happy life he has put off for so long. A beautiful tale of class, love, the immigrant's experience, and ultimately loss.

Bester, one of the acknowledged masters of science fiction from the 50s, crafts a fast-paced, tightly-written work around Gully Foyle's attempt for revenge against those who abandoned him. Bester excels in creating a dark and very gritty world which his unpredictable and sometimes disturbing protagonist finds himself up against.
A wonderful work of classic science fiction, with dark overtones you'll not find from many of his contemporaries.

Simon and co-author Burns turn a year's observation of Baltimore's open air drug markets into a rich work that reads like a novel. Using real names of the people involved and relying on first hand observation make this a personal and realistic story.
Highly recommended.
