May - New Directions: Quail Ridge Celebrates Small Presses
What's a "small press"? We define a small press as one that's not part of a large conglomerate or corporation. It's often privately owned, started by a founder with a particular vision or focus. We're going to spotlight a different small press each month of 2015. Come check them out.
May is New Directions Month!
Not many presses can say they got their start indirectly from Ezra Pound - actually, we doubt any other could. But New Directions was launched by James Laughlin in 1936, after (as a Harvard student) Ezra Pound advised him to "do something useful". He began the press as a home for experimental writing, and it became known for its annual journals of prose and poetry. New Directions is still a home for new and experimental American writing. But it has expanded its mission to include the discovery of international contemporary writers (such as Roberto Bolaño) and to provide a home for classic works republished in editions with introductions by well-known artists. New Directions poets such as Allen Grossman, Susan Howe, and Takashi Hiraide have been acclaimed in recent years, taking home many prestigious poetry awards. So take a chance on something new, and dive into one of their recommended selections.
