Debut Southern novelist, Nic Stone, explores race relations through the words of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., and the young black teenager who writes letters to him in Dear Martin, trying to make sense of his identity, and the racial profiling and prejudice all around him. We are excited to host this event as these are Quail Ridge Books staff favorites. Nic will be in conversation with local author, Scott Reintgen, author of Nyxia. We recommend these books for ages 14+ (that includes you, too, adults!)
"Raw and gripping." —Jason Reynolds, New York Times bestselling author of Ghost and Indies First 2017 Spokesperson.
"Black Yale-bound graduating senior Justyce McAllister’s life takes on a new harsh reality when he’s roughed up by a policeman while innocently helping a friend. Justyce, feeling powerless to escape systemic racism, writes letters to Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Are Dr. King’s teachings still relevant? Like The Hate U Give, this story thoughtfully encourages dialogue about the challenges of racial issues in America. A must-read for high schoolers." - Staff Pick from Michelle
