Michael McFee - 'We Were Once Here' and 'Appointed Rounds'

It is time for another Sunday of poetry. Appalachian native and UNC-Chapel Hill professor, Michael McFee, explores often-overlooked topics and will be reading from two of his works, We Were Once Here: Poems, and Appointed Rounds: Essays. His poetry examines place, time, and everyday objects, while his essays savor the details of subjects – such as books, mountains, and literature - that have mattered to him for years.

"He is quietly putting together a body of work that few poets anywhere, of any age, can match for its poise, its wit, its accessibility and depth of feeling." -- poet Alan Shapiro

In We Were Once Here, Michael McFee continues to write inventive appreciations of often-overlooked subjects, particularly the people and language of his native Appalachia. This new collection contains thoughtful and playful celebrations of such things as snoring, a wall telephone from the 1960s, yardsticks, the Sunday newspaper, and Fats Waller.
