The club's goal is to foster dialog and better understanding between people with different political viewpoints and to provide a safe space for civil discourse on controversial or divisive topics. There will be several moderators whose viewpoints span the political spectrum: left, right and neutral. The book selections will also be chosen to represent issues and viewpoints across the political spectrum. The aim of each discussion is to promote understanding ... “Ah, now I understand how they can think that!” ... rather than convince anyone of a particular point of view. The group plans to meet the first Wednesday of the month at 7 pm. This month's discussion takes place Wednesday, June 7, at 7 pm. The book for discussion is Coming Apart: The State of White America, 1960-2010 by Charles Murray. We thank all our moderators; Kory Swanson, president and CEO of the John Locke Foundation, will lead this discussion.
There is no meeting in July. And here's a look at what's confirmed for future meetings.
Wednesday, August 2: Hillbilly Elegy: A Memoir of a Family and Culture in Crisis by J.D. Vance; Gary Pearce and Carter Wrenn (the Talking About Politics blog) will lead the discussion. (Note: this book is only available in hardcover.)
September 6: Book TBDAs with all of our in-store book clubs, participants receive a 21% discount on the discussion book; just let us know at the counter when you purchase it.
