Book Clubs For Kids & Teens

Our "Book Clubs" button at the top of the page lists all our separate book clubs' selections and schedules.  Here's a synopsis of our main club activities for younger readers.

Summer B.I.R.D.S.

Our very popular summer reading club for young readers ages 5-7 runs July-August. B.I.R.D.S. stands for Beautiful Independent Readers Developing Soon.  Each summer's program has a theme.  We've traditionally met on Tuesdays from 7—8 p.m., for five weeks.  Our own Ms. Linda runs the show, so you know it’s a grand time. Watch for our special guests, too! And, of course, there’s the wrap-up party, and awarding of reading certificates!

Elementary Book Club

Do you love books? Check out our Elementary Book Club at Quail Ridge. All sessions are on Sundays at 2 p.m. There is no meeting in December.  All those in elementary school are welcome, as long as they have read the book and are comfortable talking in a small group about it.  Most attendees tend to be 2nd-4th graders.  We have refreshments, of course!  Meetings run about 50 minutes.

Battle Of The Books Club

Our BATTLE OF THE BOOKS CLUB takes its selections from the 2009–2010 Wake County Schools BOB list. We are not forming a team to compete (as that is done with schools). But if you're involved with BOB at your school, this is a good way to read some of the books and have them reinforced. You don't have to be competing in BOB (or even be in middle school) to come to the meetings.  You just have to be comfortable with reading longer, more complex books, and with discussing them in a small group setting.  Our club meets at 3 p.m. on one Sunday monthly.  There is no meeting in December.

Series Club

We periodically run a short-term club on a series of books.  We've done HARRY POTTER and PERCY JACKSON & THE OLYMPIANS (and even had author Rick Riordan visit the store just before the last session!).  Next up: Philip Reeve's LARKLIGHT Trilogy, starting March 21!

Teen Writing Group

The QRB Teen Writing Group is continuing with a moderator. The group is recommended for ages 14 and up, due to the maturity of some themes. It consists of high school teens who write stories on varying themes. The group meets every two weeks on Wednesdays at 7 p.m. to read their stories to the group for feedback. There is at least one collaborative storyline, where each member contributes writing for one or more characters.

Future meetings are:

  • March 10
  • March 24

If there is an author event on our main floor, the group will be set up in the back section of our store.
